Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful and restful summer! Over the summer, the district added an additional Secondary Language Arts Coordinator. Diana Sarao started in this position in mid-July. She and I will be sharing duties, including blog positing. The good news is this means the blog should be updated more frequently.
Other big changes this summer involved state legislation. House Bill 5 (HB 5) took Texas by storm this summer bringing quite a few changes to classroom instruction and assessment. It really has two main areas of concern: graduation requirements and assessment. Below are brief descriptions of those changes. TEA has set up an information site to assist educators as the State Board of Education interprets and implements HB 5.
Graduation Requirements
- Starting with students
entering 9th grade in 2014 there will be two types of graduation
plans: the Foundation Plan (22 credits) and the Foundation Plan with
Endorsement (26 credits).
Assessment
- HB 5 sets a limit on
Benchmark testing, which Katy ISD was ahead of with our District Level Assessments
(DLAs) being implemented in the 2013-2014 school year.
- HB 5 requires high
school students to pass the STAAR EOC Exams in the following content areas:
English I, English II, Algebra I, Biology, and U.S. History
